Join the Ely Slovenian Union of America (SUA) Chapter’s “Taste of Slovenia” celebration on August 5, 2017. It will be held at the St. Anthony’s Church Hall from 11AM to 3PM in Ely, MN.
Enjoy Hank Thurander - the strolling musician – along with demonstrations of apple strudel in the morning, walnut potica in the afternoon, wood carving, pojanje and hopefully bobbin lace. The Gornick family makes sausage and will have a member on hand with books of pictures taken during their event with explanations, POSSIBLY a butara.
Then there’s the food to be sampled - strudel, potica, beef noodle soup, mushroom soup, blood sausage, potato sausage, polish, sour potatoes, sour cucumbers, beets, crofe', stuffed peppers or stuffed pepper soup, cheese, ‘zinkrofe', home canned peppers with fresh bread, free sample of slivovitz for those who want to try it. There will be a sit-down area to enjoy it all.
Items for sale will include Slovenian music CDs, hand painted Slovenian Christmas balls, cleaning cloths, scrubbies, Slovenian cookbook, home made noodles, pepper jelly, raspberry jelly and more. A cookie jar decorated in the colors of the Slovenian flag with medenjaki cookies is a door prize and more.
In the evening there will be a polka jam session at Creek Ridge with finger food and will have a cover charge and cash bar.
Also available for your enjoyment will all of the banners from the Minnesota Slovenian Migration Exhibit that has been traveling the area since last spring. It will be at the Slovenian Embassy in Washington, DC this later this fall.
