10:15 – 11:00    Baraga Hymns  -  Professors Lawrence and Claire Martin

Those of you who attended the Baraga Cross Rendezvous last fall will remember Larry and Claire Martin, and their inspiring presentation of Baraga Hymns.  We are pleased and excited that the Martins have agreed to do a Baraga Hymns presentation at our monthly meeting on May 18.

Slovenian missionary Frederic Baraga spent almost forty years in Indian country around Lake Superior.  During that time he published many books in the Ojibwe (Chippewa) language.  Of these, the one that had the greatest impact was his Ojibwe Prayerbook, especially the collection of hymns which it included.  Larry Martin will tell us about Fr. Baraga and describe his hymns.  Claire Martin will sing one or two of them.

Larry Martin is an enrolled member of the Lac Court Oreilles Ojibwe tribe in Wisconsin and a retired professor of American Indian Studies at The University of Wisconsin—Eau Claire.  Claire is also retired from teaching at the same university, but she still sings in the Symphonic Choir there.  Larry and Claire are in charge of the music program at the Church of Gichitwaa Kateri, an American Indian Catholic church in Minneapolis.

11:00 - 11:30  Wine raffle;  check out Lending Library (return books you have borrowed!);      Coffee/Conversation

As usual, there will be a $4 charge to cover the cost of room rental, coffee and rolls.
