Twin Cities Slovenians Membership Meeting

Minutes for December 13, 2009


There were about 30 in attendance.  Our group was asked to bring non-perishable food items to the meeting that would be donated to a local food shelf in the spirit of Christmas, it was a success.


Norm Setnicker opened the meeting with a few announcements: 


Sherman Moen, husband of Gerri Karakas passed away on December 8th, 2009.  His funeral service will be on December 17th, 2009 at 11:00am at St Mark's Lutheran church, 2499 N Helen St, North St Paul with visitation at 9:30am to the time of the service.  He will be intered at Union Cemetery in Maplewood.  Full notice and guest book can be found at

Rosemary Ribich, President of the Minnesota SWUA, is recovering from an operation she had on her vertebrae.

Jeff Martinka has accepted a job in Wisconsin, he will be giving up his position as Chairperson for our exhibit in the 2010 Festival of Nation's.  Jim Smekar, Sue Rademacher and Jean Pajunen have volunteered to be replacement co-chairs.

Our 5th Anniversary celebration in January has been changed to January 23, 2010.  Friends of members are welcome to attend, RSVP's will be sent out soon and there will be a cover charge of $20 per person.

Norm presented an article from the Slovenian American Times that was printed in that publication last December.  Using an overhead projector he he showed the article and read the story of St Nickolas (Sv. Miklavz) who is traditionally portrayed as a bishop.  He also showed a manger scene with the Slovenian words for some of the items in the drawing, we went through the words.


Mary Ann Palmer read "Christmas of my Childhood" that concluded with "Vesel Božič"...  Merry Christmas


The children were given tickets for a drawing for Christmas ornaments, there were 2 winners and each child was given a candy cane.  The adults were given tickets for a drawing for 2 donated Poticas from Yvonne McComber.  A donation container was passed around afterwards.


Miro Medved led the group in the singing of Christmas Carols.  We sang Sveta noč (Silent Night) and Glej, zvezdice božje (Look at the Heavenly Stars).
