The 2015 Prešeren Day event at the Julian H. Sleeper House Museum was held on February 7, which is the anniversary of the death of Slovenia’s greatest poet, France Prešeren. In Slovenia, February 8 is an official holiday which celebrates Slovenian culture. We celebrated with a special program. There was no admission charge; food and beverages were provided.
The program was “On the Money.” Dr. Hawkins talked about historic Slovenian currency in his collection. Members of the TCS Slovenian language class told us about the notable Slovenians on the currency. Presenters included:
Norm Setnicker – Ivan Cankar
Cynthia Bradford – Jakobus Gallus
Pat Dahl – Jože Plečnik
Monica Cornelison – Primož Trubar
Chuck Podominick – Jurij Vega
Elaine Barthelemy – Ivana Kobilca
Dr Seth Hawkins – Janez Valvazor
Although the official program ended by 11:30, the museum was open till 3 p.m. In addition to the Slovenian collection, there were nine exhibition rooms to see. Free Slovenia maps and tourist brochures were available – over 120 kinds!
