ABOUT SLOVENIA, ITS HISTORY, CULTURE AND PEOPLE

 

Slovenia is situated near the center of Europe.  Italy and the Adriatic Sea are to its west, Austria to the north with Hungary to the northeast, and Croatia to the south and southeast,   Historically, present day Slovenia was formed from many differnt state formations throughout the years, and in 1991 it split from Yugoslavia and became its own state, officially known as the Republic of Slovenia.

The capitol of Slovenia is Ljubljana, other large towns are Maribor, Kranj and Celje.  The highest mountain peak is Mt Triglav at 2,864 metres, Triglav National Park is the largest protected natural area in Slovenia.  Slovenia is known as being green by its vast forests that cover over half the country and the many grasslands, fields and gardens.
