Prof Dunja Antunovic will talk about media coverage of Slovenian sporting success. International sporting events, such as recently the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, bring attention to star athletes and compelling human-interest stories on the global level to billions of viewers. Slovenia participated with 90 athletes at the Olympics, who were not covered internationally, but received media attention in the Slovenian context. The media play an important role in promoting local athletes and telling a story about the nation, which is especially pertinent to countries such as Slovenia that have undergone political transitions. This talk gives insight into Slovenian media coverage of major international sporting events, especially during the Olympics, and provides insight into how Slovenian sporting success is perceived in the neighboring countries.
Dunja Antunovic (PhD, Penn State) is an Associate Professor of Sport Sociology at the School of Kinesiology at the University of Minnesota. She is also an affiliate faculty member with the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication and an affiliate scholar with the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport. Dunja’s research examines the coverage of women’s sport in media, with a focus on production, representation, and fandom. In addition to her U.S.-based research, she also conducts research on the Olympics and the Paralympics in Slovenia, Croatia, and Hungary. She is a former tennis player who competed in Europe, internationally, and in Division I college athletics in the United States.
At this meeting, Rick Pisa will also unveil our 2025 “Beautiful Slovenia” calendar.
We’re looking forward to seeing you!
